Mossy Banks moves away from the ethereal, undefined settings of Olivia's other work and roots itself somewhere specific: the banks of the Columbia River in Washington, where the artist now lives. Having grown up in the dry climate of Southern California, her move to the Pacific Northwest was a sensory awakening, and this painting is a direct response to it.
The piece captures what Olivia describes as the shock of "true green," the deep, saturated hues of lichen, ferns, and thick moss that define the Washington wilderness she now calls a "fairyland" compared to the landscape she grew up in.
The central figure is a river nymph who reads less as a distant mythological reference and more as a stand-in for the artist herself, caught in a state of total immersion in nature. The composition echoes Olivia's own ritual of forest walks, where the small details of a mossy branch become an entire world.
It's a piece about belonging: a moment where Olivia's interior world and her new physical surroundings line up completely.
