Pandora's Box takes on one of Greek mythology's most enduring cautionary tales, but the focus isn't the chaos that got released. It's what was left behind: Elpis, the personification of Hope. The painting works as a genuine psychological question: is hope a gift, or a trap that outlasts everything else?
Olivia moves past the common image of a literal box (historically it was a jar, a pithos) to sit with something messier: her own complicated relationship with optimism, where hope has worked as both a motivator and, at times, an excuse for passivity, a waiting game that delays action rather than prompting it.
There's a literal layer of history underneath the paint. Pandora's Box was painted over an earlier work, and the faint, spectral trace of that original composition still peeks through the background, a technique known in conservation as pentimento. Here it becomes part of the story: the canvas itself carries a past the way the myth does.
Olivia keeps a sense of realism in the figure's expression while letting everything around her dissolve into something more abstracted and atmospheric, so the "box" reads less like a physical container and more like a mental state, a place where hope gets preserved, for better or worse.
