Liu Bolin painted his own body to vanish into the side of a construction site. Stand back and he's gone. Look closer and the figure is still there, buried in concrete and rebar texture.
Bulldozer belongs to Bolin's landmark "Hiding in the City" series, begun in Beijing in 2005 after Chinese authorities demolished his studio complex. The camouflage is painstaking, applied by hand over hours, then photographed in a single take. No post-production. What you see is the result of pure technical labor in service of a blunt point: cities erase people while building for them.
The work sits at the intersection of performance, photography, and political commentary. Bolin has exhibited at Galerie Paris-Beijing, been collected internationally, and been named one of the most significant Chinese contemporary artists of his generation. His prices have climbed steadily through major auction houses.
