Kato's tenth pass at his recurring hybrid figure reads less like fusion than binding: a woman is wrapped inside the trunk itself, her face and torso worked into the same thick paint as the bark closing around her. A wristwatch, its clock face still visible, rests near her head, the one clean, mechanical detail in the whole tangle. A toucan sits still on a branch above her, perched, not flying past, while roots twist into a rhino's fragmented outline at the base.
Ten paintings in, Kato keeps returning to the same question: what a body becomes once it's no longer separate from the landscape holding it up. This is the first version where that landscape reads as a container rather than a growth. The tree isn't extending from her. It's closing around her.
Time is still running here. The watch keeps ticking, but nothing else in the canvas is moving, the toucan included. That's a different kind of unsettling than the more kinetic pieces in the group, stillness instead of struggle. Ten iterations in, it's the version that holds attention longest, because nothing in it is trying to resolve.
