Barbtropolis

Barbara Graetzer, known as Barbtropolis, is a Brooklyn-based contemporary artist working across painting, drawing, and large-scale murals. Born in Rio de Janeiro to a German father and raised across multiple countries, she brings a global perspective shaped by a transnational upbringing and more than 15 years as a Creative Director in advertising — a background that shows up in the clarity and confidence of her visual language.

Graetzer is known for bold linework, distilled forms, and tightly composed color palettes that translate seamlessly from canvas to architectural scale. Her character-driven work is immediately legible yet layered, often balancing humor with tension, with figures that appear intertwined, fragmented, or suspended mid-moment — built to reward a second and third look, not just a first one.

At the core of her practice is a focus on human behavior: how people connect, perform, and coexist. Her murals extend this sensibility into public space, with site-specific installations across New York City and internationally.

Her work has been recognized by Graphis, Communication Arts, Lurzer's Archive, Applied Arts, CMYK Magazine, 3x3 Magazine, and Creative Quarterly. She holds a BFA in Visual Communication from the Illinois Institute of Art, Chicago, and an MA in Illustration from the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York.

The six prints below mark Graetzer's first works offered directly through Art Dealing Guy: archival pigment prints on deckled edge paper, each individually hand-finished by the artist in an edition of just 12 — no two impressions are exactly alike. Every piece is built around the same idea: a dense, crowded scene where dozens of individual figures somehow read as one coherent moment.
