The Three Fates reimagines the Moirai, the sister deities of Greek mythology who spin, measure, and cut the thread of human life. The subject is ancient, but the piece itself came together through a much more intuitive, modern process: erasure and repetition.
Olivia originally painted three distinct figures, then chose to paint over two of them and repeat the likeness of the first instead, drawn to the meditative, almost relaxing quality of visual repetition. What's left is a rhythmic consistency that anchors the whole composition.
Depicting the same figure three times suggests a fluidity between the roles of Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos. The figures read as identical at first glance, but subtle variations reward closer inspection, hinting at different stages of fate.
The figures also share a striking omission: no eyes, no mouths, which gives them an otherworldly, protective quality. Olivia hadn't set out to reference "see no evil, speak no evil," but the finished piece carries that echo anyway, a sense of quiet, impartial silence layered over the myth.
