About this piece

Tryptophan is the amino acid your body turns into serotonin, the chemical that helps regulate mood and sleep. Damien Hirst titles his Spot works after compounds like this one, and the result is a dry joke with some bite: a flawless grid of color, named for the molecule behind how good you feel.

The Spot Paintings are known for looking like no hand touched them. This 2010 woodcut, from the 12 Woodcut Spots portfolio published by Paragon Press, is a rare chance to see that cold precision made by hand. The grid stays exact, but the print carries the faint, physical texture of carved wood, which a painted spot never has.

Hand-signed, with a certificate of authenticity.
