Sunshine works less as a single song and more as a tribute to an entire genre of them. Working in a high-energy palette of acrylic and oil marker on paper, Cunniff builds the piece around the feeling shared by three very different songs: Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love," and Roy Ayers' "Everybody Loves the Sunshine."
As a songwriter herself, Cunniff treats the hand-lettered text less like decoration and more like a vocal line, "sung" across the paper in a style that sits somewhere between punk and pop art. Neon pink, electric orange, and sunny yellow stack up into what reads like a wall of sound: dense, layered, built to fill a room the way a favorite song does.
The technique is essentially patchwork: blocks of saturated color competing for attention, echoing the way light shifts over the course of a summer day. Oil marker gives the lettering a gritty, immediate edge against the smoother acrylic underneath, landing somewhere between street art and something more personal.
