True Hearts is the visual counterpart to "New York City Boy," a track from Cunniff's solo album City Beach. It's lyric-forward in a literal sense: the text isn't decoration, it's structure, the thing the whole composition is built around.
The painting pulses with the heat of 1980s Manhattan. Bold acrylic washes and collage build up a layered history that mimics wheat-pasted walls on the Lower East Side, and hand-painted oil-marker lettering reads like an urban eulogy for a specific era of the city: its rude boys, its street stylists, its five-flight walk-ups and subway tunnels.
The composition centers on a single, neon-drenched declaration painted directly onto the canvas: TRUE HEARTS CAN'T BE DESTROYED. It's a real statement about resilience, that specific New York alchemy where slow starts somehow turn into fast hearts.
Cunniff's aesthetic here is unapologetically visceral: gestural street-art energy merged with a sophisticated, pop-inflected sense of color. The result is a rare kind of object, a physical manifestation of a song's soul, textured like a scrapbook and scaled like a mural, exploring youth culture, urban survival, and the staying power of personal style.
