Richard Hambleton is best known for the "Shadowman" figures he painted directly onto New York City walls beginning in the early 1980s, life-size black silhouettes designed to read, for a split second, as a mugger lurking in the dark. He came up alongside Basquiat and Haring in that downtown scene and is now regarded as one of the era's three defining street artists.
The "Shadowhead" works carry that same raw black form onto paper, compressed into a crowned, totemic bust built from dense, gestural brushwork that bursts outward into a spattered halo. This piece comes from a private New York collection, acquired directly from the artist. Full documentation is available to qualified buyers upon request.
