Pointillist NYC, Taxi

Stand on a Manhattan corner after dark, let your eyes go soft, and this is what New York becomes. Yoni Alter's Pointillist NYC, Taxi catches a cab in that moment. The roof light glows, a line of red-orange marks the roof, and dark glass sits below. Everything else breaks apart into floating discs of light.

Up close, the painting is about the surface. Hundreds of overlapping discs in cyan, magenta, coral, gold and white sit on a deep navy ground, and each one is painted by hand in circular strokes you can still follow with your eye. Step back and it pulls together into something photographic, like a lens thrown out of focus on a busy street. Yoni is using a 19th-century technique to paint the way we see the city through a camera today.

New York keeps pulling Yoni back. His skyline work has been sold at the MoMA Design Store, Prestel published his New York: Cityscape Timeline, and in 2025 his 25-foot sculpture Love Continuum landed at Union Square. This painting is the most ambitious version of that relationship so far: a single large-format oil, one of one.
