Artist

The Godfather of Street Art Richard Hambleton (1952–2017) was a pioneering Canadian-American artist and a foundational figure of the 1980s New York City contemporary art scene. Often referred to as the “Godfather of Street Art,” Hambleton was a contemporary and collaborator of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, frequently outselling both at the height of their early careers.
The Shadowman and Urban Intervention Hambleton first gained notoriety for his "Image Mass Murder" series, where he painted chalk outlines and blood splatters on urban sidewalks to mimic crime scenes—a provocative conceptual project that spanned 15 North American cities. However, he is most celebrated for his iconic "Shadowman" series. These life-sized, gestural black silhouettes were splashed onto the walls of Lower Manhattan, lurking in alleys and doorways to startle unsuspecting passersby. Unlike the decorative nature of traditional graffiti, Hambleton’s work was psychological, using the city itself as a medium to evoke a visceral reaction from the public.
Transition to Fine Art: The Marlboro Man and Beautiful Paintings Beyond the streets, Hambleton was a master of the studio. His "Marlboro Man" (Rodeo) series redefined the American cowboy as a kinetic, explosive shadow on canvas, while his "Beautiful Paintings"—moody, gold-leafed landscapes and seascapes—demonstrated his range as a fine artist capable of immense romanticism and technical depth.
Legacy and Investment Value Hambleton’s influence is undeniable, paving the way for modern icons like Banksy and KAWS. Following the 2017 release of the acclaimed documentary Shadowman, his market value has surged. With works held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Brooklyn Museum, and the Andy Warhol Museum, Hambleton remains a cornerstone for collectors of Urban Contemporary and Neo-Expressionist art.
