About this piece

Another print of this exact image is in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. This one's provenance traces back to The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation. I'm happy to share the full history directly.

Lisa Lyon won the first Women's World Bodybuilding Championship in 1979 and became Mapplethorpe's most photographed female subject. Their work together became the 1983 book Lady: Lisa Lyon. Lyon thought of her body as her medium, and Mapplethorpe photographed it the way he photographed flowers: as pure form.

Here she's coated in clay that has dried and cracked across her hip and thigh. The light comes in hard from one side, so every crack holds a shadow. It's skin that reads like stone.

This is a gelatin silver print from the edition of 10, framed to 25 × 24 inches and ready to hang.

Pricing and provenance are shared privately. Get in touch and I'll walk you through this one, with more photos or a short video if you'd like.
