Secret Special Place

Secret Special Place is the most subdued painting in this collection: charcoal on canvas, monochrome, Frank alone in an abandoned subway tunnel warming himself by a small fire as a train approaches in the distance. It is also one of the earliest pieces here, from 2019, well before the fluorescent palette that now defines most of Sines's Frank Ape paintings.

The smoky, layered charcoal gives the scene a cinematic weight that Sines's brighter work does not reach for. Read as a metaphor, the underground refuge is about finding comfort and creativity in places nobody else is looking, which tracks with an artist working in charcoal rather than his usual color-forward materials.

Signed on the verso and unique, this is one of the more atmospheric and art-historically grounded works in the Frank Ape collection here, closer to observational drawing than street art.
